Happy New Year
I know, I know – I’ve been neglecting this blog again. I don’t really have any excuses I have just been kind of lazy, and self-involved. Basically I have been giving a lot of thought to how to improve my business and Internet Marketing efforts in the coming year. I have been reflectively examining how I can change my habits and strategy to make bigger gains and work more efficiently.
In November I sold off the biggest chuck of my IM income which was an eBook I wrote and market. I felt the timing was right to sell, and I didn’t foresee the income from the product continuing much longer. However the transfer of the site had left a hole, and I have been struggling to think of a way to fill it. There are a few solid options I have and want to experiment with, but have decided to take my time to develop a strategy and set goals before I jump into anything. In the past I have always just jumped in and started development before the idea was even fully developed. This has led to me owning unused domain names that I purchased at 3 in morning, and half-finished sites that I decide later are bad ideas. I don’t want to continue down that path, so I am planning to approach things a little differently in the future. I think it is easy to just mindlessly start up websites and internet business, because the initial investment is so cheap and even if you take a loss- it’s only $10 and your time. I am guilty of not valuing my time enough, and thus realize I have wasted too much of it on bad investments.
I think it’s good to evaluate your business once a year, and why not do it around the end of the year. I am not big believer in New Year’s Resolutions, but from a business perspective it’s wise. When you are the owner, manager, and employee of your business it can be difficult to be honest and critical. When you give yourself a bad grade in one area, it kind of means you have failed all areas. One issue I have is that working from home it is easy to be distracted with a multitude of things. Some bad habits I need to work on is limiting my time on reading and commenting news and political websites. When I work on clients websites I approach the work in a more serious and disciplined manor than I do when I work on my own IM projects. I don’t know what this means physiologically, but correcting this mindset is important to my success.
I am not a big fan of micromanaging myself or anyone else but I know that setting milestones and developing more productive habits is key to success.
Here’s to a productive and successful New Year.
